by: JELANIWith hip-hop music making its way more and more into mainstream media and pop culture I ask: Is hip-hop music designed for the “underground”?! YES I say!! If we were to step back for a sec to the origins of hip-hop music, its roots are virtually implanted into the streets of New York city, key word being “streets”, most of the lyrics were created and inspired for and by the environment of its mc’s. So what is happening now?? many things, as the street’s hip-hop grew up on have widened into blocks, cities, and countries, The objective should be the same: focus on appealing to the peeps you represent, and some how enlightening your community.
Mainstream success does not at all mean that some mc’s are not representin, I think it means they are simply able to convey their message a little better than some, and appeal to a wider audience. Hip-hop music is lending its name to some artists who provide mass appeal with their catchy hooks and ass shacking videos, but those who know; know! Enlightenment is key!! It what separates hip-hop from most genres of music; the collaboration of street inspired beats and rhythms with a wealth of expressive, information fused, awe inspiring lyrics; that is hip hop music!
WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Your completely right, Hip-Hop was meant for the underground, the underground was where Hip-Hop was always in purest and illest form, their once was a time where their was some good mainstream emcees but thats changed now all mainstream is now is catchy chorus', dances to go with the ong, or talk of money, drugs and guns. But if you listen to underground Hip-Hop theirs still emcees that spit rhymes that'll make you say "Ohhhhh shizzzz that was dope" nah meen just wait things will change..... At least Wu is still ill.
I agree. Hip Hop is an underground movement BUT there was a time when it reached heights and was THE number one element in music. Those days are long gone now that the generation right before us decided to make it all about sex, money and drugs amongst so many other negativity. I think that the ones who do still believe in hip hop (like the way NEVER DENY GROWTH does) have a responsibility in sharing the vibes and love for hip hop the way it was intended to be done.
I love hip hop. Never will stop and I am thankful that you guys are making it present as a movement in all ours lives...or at least for those conscious enough to look and listen. keep it up!
